$5,500
(2008)
The project's development has been abandoned due to time constraints but displayed here as the idea is still communicated.
This repeatable wallpaper is a photo mosaic of the Pope in response to his visit to Sydney, Australia in July 2008 for World Youth Day, costing the taxpayer a cool A$184 million. In addition to this funding, extraordinary temporary laws were passed allowing police to permit partial strip searches and arrest persons "causing annoyance" to WYD participants. These laws, essentially undermining basic rights and freedom of speech, made it a crime to wear a t-shirt with a message on it, handing out condoms, riding a skateboard or even playing music. Breaking this new law carried a fine of A$5,500.
In a High Court ruling on the first day of the event, the legislation was deemed invalid, by which time protesters had already lost their prime opportunity to use the world media's spotlight to question the Vatican's views on condoms, homosexuality and abortion, when the Pope arrived in Sydney. The photo mosaic contains images regarding these issues.

A t-shirt that would: have broken the temporary law.
